Wacom was appraoched with the idea of having a campaign that highlighted 12 digital artists that have been tasked with creating a piece of digital artwork using Wacom’s tablets. The 12 pieces of art would be used as desktop wallpaper in the spirit of a digital calendar for 2008. Visitors could add their email address to the site’s subscription list, enabling them to receive monthly notifications of new wallpaper. Power of the Pens would also feature a contest where site visitors would upload works of art of their own. The piece of art with the most votes from other site visitors would win a Wacom prize package. The campaign was proven to be well-received, evidenced by the 120,000 visitors recorded in the 12-month long campaign. In addition, the campaign would go on to win 3 awards: 2008 Best Web Campaign from the Oregon Chapter of the American Marketing Association, 2008 Gold Medal for Best Promotional Blast from MarketingSherpa, and 2008 Email Performance Award from the Email Experience Council. This project is the inspiration behind Pen Scrappers.
The Power of the Pens is built in WordPress. The voting engine was written by a fellow team member and featured a login system that allowed users to delete entries if the need ever arose.
